What I’m Reading This Week #16

Each week I share the books I am reading toward my Read 100 Challenge as well as links that I love.

I cannot believe that this is week #16 for this feature.  I feel as though I just started blogging a couple of weeks ago!  Our family has been on vacation this week, and I, being far too optimistic, brought an enormous stack of books along with me.  We’ve been having so much fun with grandparents, however, that I haven’t gotten through very many!

Books I’ve Read

Home for the Holidays by Heather Vogel Frederick

This is the fifth in the Mother-Daughter Book Club series.  I find the stories very sweet, quick reads, and can’t wait until I can read them with my daughter.  Each book contains a year in the life of a group of friends and their mothers, as well as the book they have chosen to read for book club that year.  Home for the Holidays varies from this format a little, in that it takes place only during the holiday season of the girls’ sophomore year.  There is plenty of drama, many happy surprises, and some good old-fashioned fun.  The girls are reading the Betsy-Tacy series, which I have never read.  I guess that is one more to add onto my list of Books to Read!

So Good They Can’t Ignore You: Why Skills Trump Passion in the Search for Work You Love

by Cal Newport

So Good They Can’t Ignore You is one of those books that I have seen recommended by many bloggers I admire, so I knew I had to check it out.  I am still reading it, but I have been challenged greatly by Newport’s ideas already.  Newport argues that “Follow your passion” is terrible advice in searching for meaningful work.  Instead he purports that people should focus on skill-building, becoming so good that you can’t be ignored.  Only by approaching your job as a craftsman approaches his or her skill, can a person truly become invested in and proud of their work.  This leads to greater happiness and job fulfillment in the long run.
