What I’m Reading This Week #10

Each week I share the books I am reading for my Read 100 Challenge and the links that I love.

Books I am Reading

better than before

Better Than Before by Gretchen Rubin

I guess I am on a little Gretchen Rubin kick, as I read Happier at Home a few weeks ago.  Better Than Before is Rubin’s study of and reflection on habits.  The most helpful part of the book for me was her identification of four personality types when it comes to habits: The Upholder, The Questioner, The Obliger, and The Rebel.  I am an Upholder–I make lists and goals and hold myself to them.  I realized while reading this, though, that my husband is a Questioner.  He will follow any habit or routine if he understands and accepts its importance.  He needs to question first and then follow through.  By understanding this difference, I feel like I have a new insight into his personality that helps me interact more effectively with him.

cover-half-a-chance

Half a Chance by Cynthia Lord

Lucy has just moved to a lake house in New Hampshire when her photographer father has to leave on assignment.  Lucy becomes friends with the family next door, learns about loons and kayaking, and enters a photography contest judged by her father–hoping to prove that she, too, is an excellent photographer.  As the summer goes on, she realizes that the family next door is going through a difficult time as their grandmother begins showing signs of dementia.  A thoughtful, reflective book that introduces children to both conservation and to the effects of dementia.

Hello Sarah, I just found your blog from MoneySavingMom. My husband and I are bibliophiles too. We are reading The Wright Brothers by David McCullough aloud to each other, 5 pages each evening. It takes a while to get through a book this way but it is a pleasant evening habit we’ve gotten into.
I am also reading Ordinary Heroes by Scott Turow–World War II fiction.

How fun! I am adding The Wright Brothers to my list of books to read right now! Thanks for the recommendation.
