The 2018 Classics Reading Challenge

If you’ve been around Orthodox Motherhood for any length of time, you know that I love to read.  That is a bit of an understatement.  I need to read.  Reading is one of the top priorities in my life.

Why?  I believe that reading improves my spiritual, emotional, and intellectual state of life.  I understand that a good book can change your life.  And so, I make time to read in spite of my busy schedule.  (I wrote an in-depth post about How I Find Time to Read 100 Books a Year that you can take a look at for ideas to help you make reading a priority.)

In years past I have set reading goals for myself.  Some years I have planned on reading 100 books others I have organized reading challenges.

In 2018 I am once again doing a reading challenge.  I am calling it “The Classics Reading Challenge.”  Here’s how it will work:

  • Each month I will focus on a different genre
  • I will read one book that is considered a classic within that genre
  • I will also read one book that is a modern classic or award winner in that genre

That means that by the end of 2018 I will have read 24 classic books in a variety of genres.  Sounds fun, right?

You are welcome to join me!  Here are some ideas to get you (and me!) started.

Good for you, planning it out, Sarah! Last year, I participated in the Modern Mrs. Darcy Reading Challenge and really enjoyed it. I kept track but didn’t tally until the end of the year and read 94 books! A little short of my 100 goal too. Oh well. BUT, this year I decided not to plan ahead and just read again what catches my interest. I’m still going to try and stretch myself to read in different genres, and read some more nonfiction. Right now, I’m in the midst of “Your God is Too Glorious” by Chad Bird and am loving it! It’s written from a conservative Lutheran view (which I am!) but has some excellent points and is really well written. I’m also working on reading on my Kindle app more instead of mindlessly scrolling through Facebook. It happens to the best of us, right? 😉 Happy reading!

Welcome!
