Our Quirky Traditions

A couple of days ago one of my blogging heroes, Anne of Modern Mrs. Darcy, wrote a great post called A Few of Our Weird and Accessible Family Traditions.  I loved getting a glimpse into her family’s traditions–from eating a slice of their wedding cake each year to having birthday donuts.  So, I thought I would share my own!

I will turn 34 tomorrow.  Yikes!  34!  And, I am looking forward to angel food cake.  You see, I’ve had angel food cake for my birthday every year since I was about 6.  I just love it–so light and airy.  I will eat angel food cake with strawberries, with chocolate sauce, or just plain in its pure simplicity.  Yum.  My grandmothers used to make delicious homemade angel food cake (with 14 egg whites!) and now my wonderful husband makes it, still good from a box.

We have other quirky (and some not so quirky) family traditions:

–We hang up streamers on our kids’ doors and fill their rooms with balloons on their birthdays

-When we cut the cake, we belt out “God grant you many years”

-My husband and I write a haiku for each other on our anniversary

-We read to our children each night

-We say Morning Prayers and Evening Prayers together as a family

-The kids get to choose the meals for the day on their Name Days

-We go apple picking each fall, strawberry picking each spring, and peach picking each summer

-Because we are Orthodox Christians, Pascha (Easter) is a really big deal

-My husband and I drink wine together on the porch during the summer

-The “Donut Fairy” will visit periodically.  Either my husband or I will surprise the family by getting up early on a Saturday morning and bringing back donuts as a surprise.  I think our kids might actually be convinced there really is such a fairy!

-We eat dinner together each night

I would love to hear about your family traditions–quirky or otherwise!
